From Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰišáȷ́ (“physician, healer”), from the root *bʰiš- (“medicine, healing”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬠𐬌𐬱𐬀𐬰-‎ (bišaz-), Northern Kurdish bijişk (“doctor”), Persian پزشک‎ (pezešk, “doctor”).
