Inherited from Old Gujarati हीउं (hīuṃ), from Prakrit हिअअ (hiaa), हियय (hiyaya, hiatus-filler) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit हृदय (hṛ́daya). Doublet of હૃદય (hŕdya), દિલ (dil), and હાર્ટ (hārṭ).
