From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ʰlajᴬ¹ (“to flow”). Cognate with Lao ໄຫຼ (lai), Lü ᦺᦜ (l̇ay), Shan လႆ (lǎi), Ahom 𑜎𑜩 (lay) or 𑜎𑜩𑜤 (layu). Compare Proto-Be *ləːjᴬ¹.
