From Proto-Tai *pleːwᴬ (“flame”), from Middle Chinese 熛 (MC pjiew, “leaping flame”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨸᩖᩮᩅ or ᨸ᩠ᩃᩮᩅ, Khün ᨸ᩠ᨿᩴ, Isan แปว, Lao ແປວ (pǣu), Lü ᦵᦔᧁ (ṗew), Shan ပဵဝ် (pǎeo), Phake ပိဝ် (piw), Ahom *𑜆𑜢𑜈𑜫 (*piw), Zuojiang Zhuang bieu.
