Etymology

First attested in 1784. Native Hungarian derivation. From the same *rep- stem as in repül (“to fly”) + -ény (noun-forming suffix). Reintroduced by Ferenc Kazinczy during the Hungarian language reform, which took place in the 18th–19th centuries from a Transylvanian dialectal word in the sense of borostyán.[1][2]
