A glider is an aircraft that is designed to be operated in unpowered flight. They typically have long, high-aspect-ratio wings, and are lightweight compared to powered aircraft.

Sailplanes have no internal propulsion and can be towed aloft by tow planes or launched using ground-based winches.

Some types, occasionally referred to as self-launching gliders or motorgliders, have propulsion systems, but they generally only use their engines to reach a point at which they can begin gliding.

Hang gliders are minimal fabric-and-tube, delta-winged gliders launched on foot and typically steered by shifting the pilot's weight.
