Models that analyse biological systems or processes using the tools of applied mathematics.

Mathematical models in biology can refer to many different types of models, with the common feature that they use the tools of applied mathematics and statistics to model biological processes. For general biological theory, see .

Mathematical models can be classified based on several aspects, but the most common classification is based on the type of equations that are used to define the system:

  • Deterministic models: Algebraic and differential equations that describe a system which is assumed to have a predictable non-random behaviour (e.g., accelerated motion as defined by Newton's laws).
  • Stochastic models: Probabilistic equations that describe a system which has an element of randomness (e.g., Brownian motion).

Modelling insecticide net efficacy loss

I am currently doing some work on modelling the effects of treated nets usage on mosquito populations. Nets do not retain their maximum efficacy forever. They lose their chemical efficacy after about three years and all that is left is the physical…

Value of mathematical models in biology

Sorry if this is too much of a soft question or if it is too broad for this site. As a person who has much more experience with math than biology, I've always been really interested in the mathematical side of biology. As I study math in biology,…
