Questions about high intensity interval training.

HIIT is a form of cardiovascular exercise. Usual HIIT sessions may vary from 7–20 minutes. These short, intense workouts provide improved athletic capacity and condition, improved glucose metabolism, and improved fat burning. A HIIT session consists of a warm up period of exercise, followed by three to ten repetitions of high intensity exercise, separated by medium intensity exercise for recovery, and ending with a period of cool down exercise. The high intensity exercise should be done at near maximum intensity. The medium exercise should be about 50% intensity. The number of repetitions and length of each depends on the exercise, but may be as little as three repetitions with just 20 seconds of intense exercise.

Doing HIIT instead of longer workouts

I current train for flat water kayak racing by doing 2 or 3 long days (2-4 hours) a week, 2 or 3 normal intervals (1-1.5 hours), and 1 or 2 rest days. But I've been able to do that because I work flexible hours. My flexible hour job is about to come…

My wife has been trying to get me to do interval training (e.g. bike hard for 30s and then take it easy for 4-5 mins) instead of ride a stationary bike, mainly so she can be outside and we can interact more instead of be on separate machines at the…
