A commonly misunderstood term that is often used alongside low-intensity low-resistance exercises. Many believe that by doing these exercises you are shaping the muscle to appear more "defined" while changing nothing else.

Toning actually occurs when you have or have gained muscle mass underneath a layer of body fat and then proceed to reduce the thickness of the fat layer through dieting and exercise. This brings the muscles more visibly into view under the skin and shows their definition.
