What experiments prove that heat can be "trapped" by a layer of material with suitable optical properties, such as carbon dioxide? I've read a little on Wikipedia but I've got only some names, not the experiments.

The evidence for global warming is from the known heat-trapping dynamics of the atmosphere. The atmosphere opaquely rescatters infrared light according to the density of CO2, methane, and H2O, so that as each of these gasses increase in concentration, the atmosphere heats up. The coefficient which determines how much the temperature goes up can be estimated in models, and measured in ice-core data, and the theory and observations agree as well as can be expected for such a complex system.
The concentration of CO2 has increased due to human activity, as everyone agrees, and in standard models, this predicts an expected rise in temperature of less than but on the order of 1 degree, which is exactly consistent with the observed warming over the last two decades. The predictions have an uncertainty, but the sign and the order of magnitude are clear, and consistent with the observations.
The uncertainty in the models does not change the fact that there was a predicted effect--- global warming in direct response to CO2 levels--- and this effect was observed on a geologically instantaneous time scale. There is no plausible reason for the effect other than human CO2 emissions. It would require a conspiracy to make an effect consistent with predictions if these predictions were somehow faulty, and there is no reason to suspect that they are.
The amount of future warming we can expect is subject to uncertainty, since we don't have perfect climate models. There is feedback in the biosphere which tends to amplify the warming effect of CO2, but we don't know exactly how much. Since we are unfortunately doing the experiment, we will probably find out.
There is just no way that nature would conspire to magically warm the planet over the past two decades in a way exactly consistent with the heat trapping estimated by the models. This is the reason for the scientific consensus that global warming is happening. There is no good reason for doubting this conclusion, but there is a lot of big money trying to seed doubt. When scientists predict something, model something, and then observe things consistent with the model, we generally say that they have verified the model. The model of global warming has been amply verified by now, and it was already fairly probable when first proposed in the 1970s. It is now essentially dead certain.

5-1, sorry to say, because I have looked into the models and you could fit an elephant with them. They have no predictive power ( give me four parameters and I can fit an elephant, a fifth and he can wiggle his ears). The basic assumption that boosts the normal effect of the .5% anthropogenic contribution of CO2 to greenhouse gases is a "sensitivity assumtions" which when measured is much smaller than the IPCC modellers have assumed. In addition the money spent with the anthropogenic bandwagon is orders of magnitude more than the money spent to try and find the true science behind the data. – anna v May 30 '12 at 11:34

It is the feedback hypothesis which they presume starts a positive cycle with H2O that pulls the tiny amounts of CO2 with respect to H2O ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmosphere_of_Earth ) into prominence to be used as a scarecrow, and that is not sustained by the data. 4@annav: The detailed models are not the source of the prediction, they are chekcing and verifying details. The prediction itself is one made by a bunch of long-haired pot-smoking people in 1970--- more CO2 means hotter Earth. The single parameter required is the one AlanSE gives--- the radiative forcing due to CO2. Also, human contributions to CO2 in the atmosphere is of order 30%. By Wikipedia, we burn making about 30 billion tons, and the atmosphere has 3000 billion tons. This swamps natural CO2 changes, and is obviously the cause of rising CO2 levels. – Ron Maimon May 30 '12 at 18:35

1@RonMaimon Nobody is disputing that humans raise CO2 or that CO2 has a contribution to the greenhouse effect. Please read up on the feedback mechanism which is absolutely necessary in order for the predictions of 6 meter rise in sea level and more than 2C degrees higher average temperature by the end of the century. Without the feedback introduced in the models, called "sensitivity to CO2" which goes: CO2 raises temperature,temperature evaporates H2O,temperature rises, evaporates H2O ... the results are much smaller than the IPCC sponsored models predict. – anna v May 30 '12 at 19:06

1@annav: The question of sea level prediction or the future warming is not the same as the question of whether we are responsible for the present warming. The answer to that is an unquestionable "yes". You might like the arctic sea unfrozen and North America balmy, so the effects might be peachy, or there might be some feedback that lessens the impact, but so far, the estimates of climate change have been too conservative--- the effect so far has been bigger than anticipated. I have read through the AR4 blurb on climate models and their evaluation, all 593 pages of it, and at the time, some years ago, I was walking around pulling my hair at the gross assumptions and oversimplifications. Climate "scientists" of AGW are financed with billions, and they get good PR. Their extrapolations of that time are way off now. Any "little ice age" business is much slower than this human stuff, ignore it, you are talking about derivatives when you should be comparing absolutes, the last decade is warmer than the 1980s by the amount you expect due to greenhouse gasses. The warming doesn't appear in continuous increments, but in bursts, as long-standing local equilibria are broken due to forcing. I have no patience with questioning the climate science model--- I don't care about this model. 4You can question models until you are blue in the face--- the main point is that a 30% rise in CO2 is expected to heat the planet, and an additional 50% rise in the planet will warm the planet by the same amount or more. The experiment is already done, we know its about 1 degree for this much carbon dioxide, so the standard predictions are roughly right, and whether there will be more melting here or there, or whether it will be 5 degrees is a matter of uncertainty, but considering the planet-wide effects, it's best to be as hysterical as possible, to get action done. – Ron Maimon May 31 '12 at 18:53

The greenhouse effect is well-established science, and experiments that demonstrate the effect on a lab scale are common to the point that they are often presented in science fairs. When I say "greenhouse effect" in this context, I'm referring to the radiative trapping of heat by absorption of outgoing radiation by gases. As has been pointed out on Physics SE before, this is distinct from actual greenhouses, which maintain their air temperature higher than the air around it by preventing convective heat transfer with higher portions of the atmosphere.
Let's discuss the required attributes of an experiment to properly demonstrate the described greenhouse effect.
We should require that the experiment has a control volume and a volume that demonstrates a higher temperature due to the presence of a (higher concentration) greenhouse gas. To be fully representative of the planetary greenhouse gas effect, we will likely use an external source of radiation such as a lamp. There is no shortage of demonstrations that meet these requirements on youtube. The gas could be any common greenhouse gas. Naturally, this includes carbon dioxide. The gas needs to have sufficient mass-thickness to achieve meaningful blockage of outgoing radiation. Experimental budget will probably require it to be done at atmospheric pressure, thus, a higher concentration is typically used to show the effect. For instance, by having a container that is nearly 100% CO2, 1 foot of thickness blocks the same amount of radiation as 350 ppm concentration of the gas in the atmosphere over about half a mile. Because of this, differences in temperature higher than experimental error can be (and have been) observed in small-scale experiments.
This nature of experiment has been done many times. Scientists have even carefully measured the radiative forcing value CO2. Here is a graph showing the radiative forcing obtained from experiments.

This goes above and beyond demonstrating the greenhouse effect, and actually quantifies the effect through experiment, all of which are consistent with the desktop science projects that a small science class can do. I should qualify these statements with the fact that the radiative forcing is specific to the temperature of the surface, its emissivity profile, the other gases present, and the incoming spectrum. The parameters of a simple experiment will differ from greenhouse effect on a planetary scale, but the presence of the effect is the same for both. The absorption bands specific to the greenhouse gas (and in particular CO2) are well established by science. The increase in the effect due to increasing concentration of a greenhouse gas is due to effective broadening of absorption bands, which leads to definable predictions about how the radiative forcing changes, which this site has entertained questions about before. A correct description of the greenhouse effect may range in sophistication from saying it "blocks the outgoing radiation" to using detailed computer models of the radiative physics. Either way, the effect is very well proven by consistent theory and experiment and can make definable predictions with good accuracy. This part of climate science is, in no way, credibly contested. The contested part of climate science relevant to present-day politics is if the sum total impact of humans on climate will lead to higher surface temperature, which is outside the scope of this question.

You need to distinguish between the greenhouse effect, which is well established, and anthropogenic global warming, which is rather more controversial.
The greenhouse effect is due to gases like water vapour and carbon dioxide that allow visible light to pass through them but scatter infrared light. This causes the planet to warm up just like a greenhouse does (hence the name). I don't think there's a definitive experiment to point to, because the effect is so obvious and has been known for decades if not centuries (I forget when it was first discovered that carbon dioxide absorbs infra-red, but it was a long time ago).
The green house effect is a very good thing otherwise the Earth would be too cold to support life. As Martin says in his answer, the Moon gets the same radiation from the Sun as the Earth, but without a greenhouse effect it has a much lower average temperature: about -50°C according to Wikipedia (the lack of an atmosphere also means it has huge swings in temperature).
There can be too much of a good thing. The greenhouse effect also operates on Venus, where it raises the temperature to 460°C.
Anthropogenic global warming is the idea that carbon dioxide created by mankind is increasing the strength of the greenhouse effect and causing a temperature increase. It certainly appears that the average global temperature is increasing and the evidence from this comes from historical climate records. Carbon dioxide levels can be measured for air bubbles trapped in Antarctic ice so we have a pretty good idea of how they've changed over time.

2There is a lot of zealotry in the debate about anthropogenic global warming, and I don't think this is the place for such debates. Having said that, while everyone accepts that both CO2 and temperatures have risen correlation doesn't necessarily imply causation. It's also true that the global temperatures have varied in recorded history and current changes could be natural variation. Finally the concept of a global average needs careful thought because there are such wide variations. – John Rennie May 30 '12 at 08:48

The CO2-warming correlation is not just a correlation--- there is a known mechanism for trapping the heat, there are models that predict the warming, and the 1970s predictions for the amount of warming expected in the 1990s and 2000s have been roughly born out (although the predictions were slightly conservative). I must downvote, only because it is a distortion of the scientific consensus to say anthropogenic global warming is anything other than a reasonably well established scientific fact, at the 3-5 sigma confidence level. – Ron Maimon May 30 '12 at 10:17

My strong conclusion is that if "virtually all scientists" believe that anthropogenic sources are responsible for the warming, most of the scientists belong on this subject to the group who believed that the sun went around the earth. Temperatures have been with normal climate variations much higher than the present ones. The effect of the correlation of CO2 to the rise in temperature comes only through the modeling through complicated programs with tens of parameters and a lot of assumtions. @annav Earth's atmosphere is a non-linear system and therefore has to be modelled numerically. As such it will have many parameters. Of course there is uncertainty in the parameters, but that is accounted for via probabilistic and ensemble modelling. Ice core evidence does show warmer periods. Yes, there is extra CO2 but the percentage of CO2 in the atmosphere and the percentage of the infrared window it covers compared to H2O is also small. It is only by a feedback hypothesis that they can push the role of CO2 in the models, and the sensitivity they assume is disproved by the measurements of sensitivity. The modeling programs they use are the weather models with averages for a number of variables otherwise the computing time would be enormous. The logic behind this though is the same as for the weather predictions. 1@EnergyNumbers They are not predicting die rolls. They are predicting maps of the future using past data. To be able to do that it is not enough to fit past data with N parameters and assumptions, in a similar way that a map of known territory may be very accurate but the extrapolation to unmapped territory is dubious the further away from the mapped region one is. The real dynamics is chaotic and non linear. Linear extrapolations work for a part of the future time, but it is inevitable they will fail, whether one calls it weather or one calls it climate. @annav your knowledge of the models appears to have sufficient gaps as to have led you to mistaken conclusions. They are more complex than merely linear relationships: even Arrhenius' model was non-linear, and that's more than a century old. Weather is not climate, and it's not just a question of scale. Weather is extremely sensitive to boundary conditions: climate is not. Will it be hotter or colder than today, this time next week? You don't know. Anna is wrong about the number of parameters in the core model--- it's essentially one parameter, namely the one AlanSE has explained--- and the back of the envelope estimates from the 1970s get it roughly right.
