I am a constant and consistent learner of new technologies. One must always keep up with technology so as to not become obsolete in your career field. Unfortunately, I have and am seeing obsolescence of my peers in my place of employment. Those people are the first ones to either get laid off or "reassigned" to other, lesser positions.
One way to to keep up with technology is to get together with your fellow technologists once (or more times) per week and discuss industry trends, what you learned, your achievements, etc. This requires you to be disciplined, and it will certainly pay off in time.
One last piece of advice. Don't lie about or over-inflate your abilities just to get your foot in the door or to get ahead in your place of employment. It will be noticeable on day one. I have seen this too many times in my career, and there are plenty of people like myself who will call you out.
