I found this strange file on my desktop the other day, its file name is "Image Catalog".

The File Icon

I didn't think much of it at first, but then I decided it wasn't working and I wanted to delete it.

But strangely, after I right-click it, the options displayed only "open in a new window", "open", "fixed to quick access", "fixed to 'Start'" and "create a shortcut" these options, and no delete and properties and other options.

The Operations TAB

When you open this file, it looks like this:

Chose The "open" Option

You can't add files to it, or move the file itself. In fact, you can't find it in Explorer, the terminal doesn't show it, and deleting it with Powershell doesn't help as well.

I tried another file manager, such as Total Commander, but it couldn't find the file either, and it didn't show up in the file list at all.

Again, no matter how many times the computer is rebooted, the file still remains on the desktop.

One of my friends said that it's because my wallpaper software did not delete clean, I have deleted all the wallpaper software on my computer, but still no effect.

I tried searching for files with the same terms and found these:

The Search Result

I have no idea where this file came from. Although it hardly has any effect on my computer, I want to remove it anyway.

The operating system of my computer is Windows. If anyone can figure out how to solve this problem, I'd be grateful!

  • Do you see it in folder C:\Users\YourUserName\Desktop? Ensure you can see hidden and system files in Explorer Options, View tab. – harrymc Mar 18 '24 at 09:35
  • Have you by any chance installed this https://www.360totalsecurity.com/en/ and then uninstalled it partially? – ChanganAuto Mar 18 '24 at 10:14
  • Check C:\Users\Public\Desktop and if it is located there, then delete it. If you delete and it can still be viewed, give it a reboot, see if that clears it assuming it's in the Windows public desktop folder which would show on your desktop. – Vomit IT - Chunky Mess Style Mar 18 '24 at 10:31
  • See if IOBit can delete the item. I use this successfully. – John Mar 18 '24 at 14:10
  • @harrymc Nope, I can't find this file in either the file Manager or the file directory in terminal, even though I showed all the hidden files. – Illidan Thunderism Mar 19 '24 at 04:31
  • @ChanganAuto I do have, but it was a long time ago and I uninstalled it in the control panel. – Illidan Thunderism Mar 19 '24 at 04:40
  • @Vomit IT - Chunky Mess Style No, the file isn't even in the directory, let alone delete it. – Illidan Thunderism Mar 19 '24 at 04:42
  • Have you unchecked also "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)"? – harrymc Mar 19 '24 at 09:05
  • @IllidanThunderism I've seen this before & cleared it, but I don't recall the specifics. Post with an embedded video someone says deleting from cmd resolved for them: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/cant-delete-an-icon-on-the-desktop-could-not-find/08f23813-d0e6-4a17-bfd9-4b40e3c93259. It sounds vaguely familiar but I have other teams nowadays that deals with workstations PCs more than I do. In case any variation of these work, wanted to share just in case: https://superuser.com/questions/1462176/two-files-will-not-delete-from-hdd/1462392#1462392. Good luck regardless. – Vomit IT - Chunky Mess Style Mar 19 '24 at 14:11
