Open source application suite that includes Writer, Calc, Impress, Base, Draw and Math

OpenOffice is an open source office application suite. It consists of the following programs:

  • Writer - Word processor similar to WordPerfect and Microsoft Word
  • Calc - Allows users to create and edit spreadsheets
  • Impress - Presentation program along the likes of PowerPoint and Keynote
  • Base - Database management system
  • Draw - Vector graphics editor akin to Visio and CorelDRAW
  • Math - Program to create and edit mathematical formulae similar to Microsoft's Equation Editor

History

OpenOffice.org, which has been discontinued, was an open-source version of the earlier StarOffice, which Sun Microsystems acquired for internal use. After acquiring Sun, Oracle Corporation continued developing OpenOffice.org, but on a much reduced scale. The majority of outside OpenOffice.org developers left the project to form The Document Foundation. TDF released the fork LibreOffice, which most Linux distributions soon moved to. Oracle donated the project to the Apache Foundation, which still develops the project under the name Apache OpenOffice.
