Questions tagged [truecrypt]

Truecrypt is software that is used to encrypt or decrypt (virtual) partitions or entire drives.

Truecrypt is an open-source on-the-fly disk encryption utility for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, currently maintained by The TrueCrypt Foundation.

Truecrypt, unlike most other backup utilities, creates a single encrypted virtual drive, which is then mounted. Any files written to the mounted virtual drive are then encrypted and stored in the virtual drive.

It also allows on-the-fly encryption of whole partitions and storage devices, as well as operating systems.

I'd like to hear from TrueCrypt users who've had both good and (if any) bad experiences with it: Is it reliable enough for business-critical use? In my case, I expect to use file-based containers rather than encrypting entire partitions. For me the…

I used the same password for my hidden volume as my outer volume. Did I lose my outer volume's data?

I had a regular TrueCrypt volume that contained data that I actually wanted to keep. Well, like a complete moron, I decided to experiment with hidden volumes and, of course, I used that existing volume as the guinea pig. The outer, unhidden…

Is Locking or putting a computer to Sleep safe with full disk encryption?

I'm using Truecrypt for full-disk encryption of my computer's drives. Is it safe to Sleep or Lock my computer, or would that allow someone to bypass the disk encryption and access the data on the drives as if they weren't encrypted?

How can I reduce the physical size ("size on disk") for TrueCrypt encrypted volumes?

I have an encrypted TrueCrypt volume with dynamic size (maximum 4GB). I had about 900MB used on that volume (and so the "size on disk", or the physical volume size on my "real" hard drive was also about 900MB). Now I have deleted some stuff from…

I'm gonna encrypt a PenDrive using AES (with TrueCrypt). What would be the most efficient allocation unit size when formatting? Since AES block size is 16 KB, would 16 KB be the most efficient? Is this logic correct?
