The x is done by \times. It must be used in mathmode:
$3\times4$
$N\times N$

@KhalidHussain: In text mode just write
$\times$, but the numbers should be typeset in math mode as well, as it is done above in the answer post. – Martin Scharrer Jan 04 '19 at 07:53 -
@MartinScharrer how do you achieve the dot for multiplication sign instead of
x? – Shimmy Weitzhandler Jan 14 '19 at 04:44 -

3Answering to Shimmy's comment: you might be looking for
\cdot. – Eerik Sven Puudist Apr 23 '20 at 12:11 -

$\times$is not equivalent to\texttimesbecause the former will be set in the math font (as opposed to the main font). So if you're using a custom main font (and haven't bothered to set a matching math font) you may well prefer to use the text times. – Elliott Slaughter Feb 09 '21 at 23:37
$N\times N$or what do you mean? – Apr 06 '11 at 10:47\timesoperator and its operands, you may use:$\medmuskip=0mu 3\times3$within text, as outlined by http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/41913/how-to-get-less-spacing-in-math-mode – math Mar 16 '14 at 13:49
