I can compile the above given document with pdflatex but not lualatex anymore. I am pretty sure this issue is due to a recent update of my TeX Live 2019 installation from today or a few days ago.

This is LuaTeX, Version 1.10.0 (TeX Live 2019)
 restricted system commands enabled.

If I run with a picture in a subdirectory I get:

LaTeX Warning: File `pics/1-uniform_7_p6_[2].pdf' not found on input line 7.

! error: (file "pics/""1-uniform_7_p6_[2]".pdf) (pdf backend): cannot find ima
ge file '"pics/""1-uniform_7_p6_[2]".pdf'
! ==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced!

There is something weird with the use of quotes

"pics/""1-uniform_7_p6_[2]".pdf

When I remove the package grffile, lualatex works again.

If someone one wants to reproduce it, an absolute up-to-date TeX Live 2019 is probably necessary. (In case you are writing a thesis, you might not want to update your TeX Live installation until you have submitted your thesis. A lesson I learn again and again.)

  • yes, this is known https://github.com/ho-tex/oberdiek/issues/73. There is also a work around. – Ulrike Fischer Oct 24 '19 at 14:59
  • I did not know this github repository to look for issues. Your help is very welcome. Thank you! – Hotschke Oct 24 '19 at 15:05
  • @UlrikeFischer If you don't tell me otherwise, I'd like to stress that the grffile package has to be loaded before graphics, includepdf and other such packages. – Keks Dose Oct 24 '19 at 15:06
  • @KeksDose loading order shouldn't matter. – Ulrike Fischer Oct 24 '19 at 15:09
  • sorry about that, I'm minded to mark this as a duplicate, the question is about svg rather than grffile but the issue and the workaround is the same, I hope to get some updates out at the weekend, but need a few more tests. – David Carlisle Oct 24 '19 at 18:13
