How do I change the typeface in the \verbatim environment?

Question

I am aware that this question has been asked before but it has not been answered to my satisfaction. It has been posted as an answer here (Change typeface of verbatim environment) that the only way to change the typeface in the verbatim environment is through the command

\newcommand{\verbatimfont}[1]{\def\verbatim@font{#1}}%

But that doesn't work if I want to use Inconsolata or IBM Sans. How do you do it?
