Avoid linebreaks in LaTeX console / log output

(in the mac) I find quite annoying that for example running:

$ /usr/textbin/pdflatex MyDocument.text

Results in an 80 characters wide chunk:

It looks like pdflatex breaks its output string before sending it out. Apparently TexShop has the same problem (since the GUI shows the same issue). However, Latexian does show well formatted output so this should be possible. I wonder how can this be done? :)

Some messages/errors/warning are really hard to see in this form.

I have tried the --help option and played with some arguments without luck. Is this a missconfiguration of pdflatex or my Terminal/Shell?
