{latin-modern} is about the Latin Modern font set.
The Latin Modern fonts were created by GUST, the Polish TeX users group, and are based on the computer-modern fonts created by D. Knuth (which was released to the public domain by AMS). Latin Modern fonts contain many additional glyphs, support math fonts, and come in a variety of font-encodings. The fonts are available in type1 and opentype format, so they can be used with any TeX engine. Latin Modern can be used via the lm package with \usepackage{lmodern}, while the math support for the OpenType format is provided by the lm-math package.
