Kuvio (Finnish for 'pattern') seems to be a very general tool for diagram making.
- Which are the major disadvantages?
- Why isn't it used more often (only one Q/A on the site seems to mention it)?
- Can it be used in papers sent to mathematical journals?

PSTricks. An alternative would be TikZ, of course. Advantage of those: actively maintained, large userbase. – Johannes_B Sep 03 '14 at 08:07tikz-cdwork with all engines (latex, pdflatex, xelatexandlualatex), while Kuvio requireslatex(withdvipsandps2pdf). The more recent packages are far more powerful. Does this list suffice? – egreg Sep 03 '14 at 09:02tikz-cdworks fine on MikTeX 2.9, Windows 7. You also can use thepsmatrixenvironment, frompst-node. You can compile pstricks code withpdflatexnow, if you launch it with the--enable-write18switch. – Bernard Sep 03 '14 at 23:40
