In source2e (specifically ltfiles.dtx) under \document, the following definition is given:
34 \if@filesw
35 \immediate\openout\@mainaux\jobname.aux
36 \immediate\write\@mainaux{\relax}%
37 \fi
In plain English: the first line of the aux file begins with \relax.
For what purpose does the \relax serve?
\if@filesw? – Jonathan Komar Oct 30 '17 at 10:03\nofilesis issued and no writing to the auxiliary files is performed to begin with. I was referring to interaction with the operating system. – egreg Oct 30 '17 at 10:04\include... I tried to remove that line and played around to find different behavior (with permissions and other things) but didn't found anything useful. Just adding the idea for more anyone experienced that may find something useful. – koleygr Oct 30 '17 at 11:11
