Following suggestions here: Manually breaking a long URL (in the bibliography) and here: How can I break a long URL in bibliography I am trying to insert a break in a .bib file URL that is giving an overfull hbox warning.

This is the code used to create the bibliography:

\usepackage{hyperref} is commented out because, when included, the error:

! Paragraph ended before \Hy@setref@link was complete.

occurs.

The entry that gives the warning in the .bib file:

Trying to tell LaTeX that it is a URL (before telling it where to insert the break) I try:

But this gives the URL as:

Can anyone tell me what am I doing wrong here please?

  • have you checked if either the packages hyperref or url are loaded in your document's preamble? – naphaneal Mar 23 '18 at 16:37

  • If I compile your document with the .bib entry you show I get a nicely broken URL with and without hyperref. What exactly do you get? Can you add a screenshot of the output? Are you sure your versions are up to date? – moewe Mar 26 '18 at 09:34
  • Hello moewe, I get a broken URL too, but it throws the overfull hbox warning, and the output is not hyphenated. I'll add a screenshot above if I can. I know that the overfull hbox is just that, a warning, and not an error, and that it is not that important, but it would be nice to have everything working correctly, and to have the output hyphenated. – cohara Mar 26 '18 at 10:09
  • Mhhh. I'm pretty sure that the URL is not the culprit here. It is nicely broken across lines and does not seem to run into the margin. Instead I guess that the "datasheet" is the problem. The exact output, however, can not be reproduced from your MWE with the newest version of biblatex-apa. What happens if you write \hyphenation{data-sheet} in your preamble? – moewe Mar 26 '18 at 10:21
  • moewe thank you! I have been staring at it so long, and didn't even notice the datasheet thing. I assumed it was the URL because the word Comp is not hyphenated where it is broken. Adding the \hyphenation{data-sheet} fixed it! Thank you. Also, I deleted the question about bold volume numbers because I am missing too much information for it to be a good question (not deliberate, I didn't realise it was all required).   • URLs are deliberately not hyphenation to avoid confusion over whether an hyphen was present in the original URL or whether it was introduced by the line breaking. If you are still interested in bold version numbers a set-up similar to the example in this question would probably be sufficient. – moewe Mar 26 '18 at 10:54

Your question is not very clear, you did not show us the code you use to create your bibliography.

To give you a start let us check the following MWE. It uses package filecontents to have tex code and bib file together in one compiling MWE. To get printed url I used package natbib and bibliography style plainnat. Please see that I also used package hyperref to get better breakable urls ...

If you want a answer for your circumstances, please show us in your question with an MWE (copy mine and change it to show your used packages and bib style) your current situation ...

I marked the differences with red arrows. Can it be that you are using another font and did not call it in your given MWE? Or do you use wider margins not given in the MWE? It also could be that one or more of your used packages is outdated. I added command \listfiles to my MWE. It results in the following list of used packages and version numbers:
