I would recommend to use \left and \right as well

\hat{e}\left(aP,bP\right) = \hat{e}\left(P,bP\right)^a

For such simple expression, I would not recommend. Maybe \bigl( \bigr). But this is just opinion. – Sigur Jul 07 '18 at 13:53
