for whatever reason I cannot come up with I am not able to plot a surf figure I have generated in MATLAB and then converted to tikz using the script available here. I am getting the following errors:

! Package pgfkeys Error: I do not know the key '/tikz/axis lines' and I am goin g to ignore it. Perhaps you misspelled it.

! Package pgfkeys Error: I do not know the key '/tikz/surf' and I am goin g to ignore it. Perhaps you misspelled it.

! Package pgfkeys Error: I do not know the key '/tikz/colormap/jet' and I am goin g to ignore it. Perhaps you misspelled it.

! Package pgfkeys Error: I do not know the key '/tikz/shader' and I am goin g to ignore it. Perhaps you misspelled it.

I initially thought that it was because of the version I am using of tikz/pgsplots, but I donwloaded the latest versions and I am now using them but still get the same errors...

Funny thing is that other plots that use the same "unknown" tags (i.e: \begin{axis}) work perfectly..

Here is the code I am trying to compile. Any guess?

I have no problems in compiling it, once removed paths you used to call packages. I have a complete TeXLive recently updated. – Claudio Fiandrino May 18 '12 at 12:07
  • Thanks @ClaudioFiandrino. I guess that this means that I am not including the packages correctly? What might be wrong? – Dan May 18 '12 at 12:09

I don't know if in your pc you have your own modified version of packages in those directories. I think you should try to use simply \usepackage{tikz} and \usepackage{pgfplots}: with a full TeXLive this is sufficient. – Claudio Fiandrino May 18 '12 at 12:22
  • I tried this and got exactly the same errors... – Dan May 18 '12 at 12:29
  • Can you add the command \listfiles to your preamble and post the table of package versions here that appears near the end of your .log file? – Jake May 18 '12 at 12:38

@Dan: You're using pgfplots.sty 2009/02/14 Version 1.2.2, which is really outdated (the current one is 1.5.1), so your system isn't set up right. Which distribution are you using (TeXLive 2011, MikTeX?), and how do you install/update packages (using the tlmgr package manager, or by hand)? – Jake May 18 '12 at 13:01
  • @Jake Thanks for your help! I am on Ubuntu 11.04, using the LateX and pgfplots that comes with the package manager. How can I update the version? Should I manually install it? – Dan May 18 '12 at 13:17

@Dan: Unfortunately, Ubuntu only comes with the old version of TeXLive 2009, so you'll have to install TeXLive 2011 (including the package manager tlmgr) manually. It's not very hard: How to install “vanilla” TeXLive on Debian or Ubuntu? – Jake May 18 '12 at 13:20
  • @Jake +1000 You were right, Ubuntu 11.04 uses TeXLive 2009. I manually installed TeXLive 2011 as explained in http://milindpadalkar.wordpress.com/2011/05/04/installing-texlive-2010-in-ubuntu-10-04-10-10-and-11-04/ and then updated my package version through $tlmgr update pgfplots and rock'n'roll. Cheers guys! – Dan May 18 '12 at 14:30
