I would like to shorten this underbrace so that it terminates directly underneath the vertical bars without extending past them.
Minimal Working Example:
\documentclass{report}
\newcommand{\Underbrace}[2]{{\underbrace{#2}_{#1}}}
\begin{document}
[\Underbrace{a}{|x+y|}]
\end{document}

\Underbrace{\!|x+y|\!}. But the use case would change dependent on the input. – Werner Feb 22 '21 at 18:43\!the\underbracestill stretches too wide because of the additional space around the extensible delimeters. – Werner Feb 22 '21 at 19:53$\,\Underbrace{..}{\!|x|\!}\,\,\Underbrace{..}{\!|y|\!}\,$.
