Buttons allow users to directly trigger an action or activity in a software solution, and is a concept borrowed from its physical counterpart in its digital design. Use this tag for questions about how buttons should be placed, styled, aligned or used to express their purpose and facilitate their operation.

A button performs actions in a user interface, and is often labeled with text or icons accordingly. Often it is linked directly to a call-to-action, or an invitation for the user to trigger a desired action in the interface. In user interface design, a button is not constrained to a physical specification as long as there is a touch-point or hot spot for the user to trigger the function associated with the action.

In screen design, buttons are often visually more complex than a mere text- . In screen design and , buttons often mimic the look and also behaviour of actual physical buttons, like three dimensional extrusion, deformation or emitting sound when being pressed.
