Questions about using TeX and related systems for typesetting documents in Indic languages and scripts.

is for questions about using TeX and related systems (usually XeLaTeX and LuaLaTeX) for typesetting documents or words in Indic languages and scripts.

Since these scripts are not part of the usual TeX character encodings, one typically must use a variant of the LaTeX engine. and are common choices; if your workflow involves one of these engines, please add its tag to your question.

Here are two popular packages for working with Indic scripts; both work with XeLaTeX and LuaLaTeX.

  1. (package documentation) allows the user to choose from fonts installed on their computer. It supports the following Indic scripts: Bengali, Devanagari, Gujarati, Gurmukhi, Kannada, Karosthi, Malayalam, Oriya, Sinhala, Syloti Nagari, Tamil, Telugu, Thaana, and Tibetan.
  2. (package documentation) builds on fontspec somewhat like the babel package, handling things like directionality, hyphenation, and switching between multiple scripts. It supports the following Indic languages: Bengali, Divehi, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, and Tibetan.
